Baltimore Marathon Training: Week 6 (7/20 – 7/26/15)

Just like that, I’m 1/3 the way through marathon training! I don’t really feel like it, though. I’ve hit a few roadblocks along the way and with downgrading to a lower mileage plan, I feel like I didn’t do all that much this week. It’s probably a good thing though, since my right leg is still bothering me. It was pretty painful this morning, so hopefully two non-running days will help it feel a little better.

Monday: Rest

Tuesday: 3 mi, 29:59. Each mile was faster and I felt really comfortable running for the first time in a while. I was happy with my pace, that was faster with each mile because the first mile was almost completely downhill and then the last two were all up. I’m not a big fan of my NH town, but I love running there. My right leg cramped up immediately after stopping.

Wednesday: 5 mi, 52:05. 1 mi WU/CD, with three hill repeats. It’s a two mile road up a mountain, and we used to do it twice on a Saturday in high school. I felt so natural climbing up it. My leg felt surprisingly good, even after I was done. It was the perfect day weather-wise, mid 60’s, low humidity, clouds and a nice breeze!

Thursday: Rest – I was having an emotional day and my stomach was feeling pretty upset.

Friday: 3 mi easy on the treadmill, arm weights. I’m still feeling it today!

Saturday: 7 mi at 11:05 avg pace (4:1 intervals). My leg felt alright once I was running for about a minute, but the walk intervals were awful. I’m lucky that my plan only called for 7 today. While my stamina is definitely there and I felt like I could have kept going, my leg was seizing up.

Sunday: Easy bike ride in the morning, perhaps some weights. Then heading to Lake Placid to watch and volunteer at the Ironman!

Weekly miles: 18

I feel so strange being this far “in” to the training cycle and being at this low mileage. Next week my long run is 12 (finally, my long runs have been lacking this whole cycle) and I know I can do it if my leg cooperates. I’m going to go back to my Brooks this week to see if the new Asics may be the culprit. I’d take my tight calves over this pain any day and I have a race that I’m really looking forward to in two weeks! It’s hard to think that it’s now just 12 weeks until the marathon! I know I have plenty of time and my main goal is just to finish but I’m already feeling so unprepared.

  1. I think that’s awesome you listened to your body and adjusted your plan! I’m horrible at doing that and have really screwed myself up before. Three months still leaves you plenty of time to hit your workouts! When I freak out about how “little” time is left, I try to reframe it in my mind as, how screwed would I be if I took that whole period off? Because then it makes it feel like a “lot” of time. Maybe that makes no sense at all, but that’s how I usually talk myself off a training ledge.

  2. Oh no why won’t your dang leg cooperate?! You might have already said this but where in your leg does it hurt? I had issues with my right leg during marathon training too!
